Those seasoned chili slingers looking for a repeat victory in the 2019 MoTech Chili Cookoff had to settle for second and third place. Upstart rookie Adam Kopchak crept into the competition with his Red Hot Riplet Bacon Chili and the rest was history. If the name alone wasn’t enough to nab the trophy, the taste surely sealed the deal.
Once a year, the MoTech office fills up with the aroma of wafting chili and tables lined with crock pots and sampling cups. This year’s nine contestants ran from chili soup to white garbanzo chili, with spiciness ratings as varied as the offerings. Employees lined up to sample and rank the chilis.
Adam’s first foray into the Chili Cookoff also marked his first time making chili, despite serving as a line cook in his past. After a slow eight-hour simmer, Red Hot Riplet Chili made its debut. “I appreciate coming in first, but it had to have been close,” Adam said. “All the other chilis were insanely good and any one of them deserved to win.”
Adam is already planning to defend his title. “I might try to change things up and go with some version of a beer chili next year.” The line is already forming.
